Red Bull Eyes Piastri as Verstappen Insurance Policy

Red Bull has identified Oscar Piastri as its preferred replacement for Max Verstappen should the four-time world champion leave the team, sources confirmed in the Miami paddock. Although Verstappen remains contracted for next year, team principal Laurent Mekies and Oliver Mintzlaff have developed a contingency plan targeting the McLaren driver in case of an unexpected departure.

Piastri has distanced himself from manager Mark Webber this season, opting to work with former F2 engineer Pedro Matos instead. The strategic shift has delivered results—podium finishes in Japan and Miami followed an opening-round setback. His improved relationship with McLaren and on-track performance have made him an attractive option for Red Bull, which faces uncertainty around its driver lineup.

The interest also reflects Red Bull's broader transformation following Helmut Marko's departure after over two decades. Under Marko, the team relied on its junior academy, but new leadership appears open to the external market. With over 2,000 employees depending on driver stability, securing a proven alternative makes business sense.

Piastri's contract runs through 2027, giving McLaren leverage in any negotiation. While a straight swap with Verstappen remains speculative, the scenario underscores how quickly F1 driver markets can evolve.
