Pirelli Aims to Revamp F1 Tyre Strategy for 2026 Season

Pirelli Motorsport boss Mario Isola has signaled a potential shift in Formula 1 tyre strategy for 2026, acknowledging the current one-stop race dominance and signaling a possible move to widen the available compounds. This comes after the first two races saw Mercedes and others largely succeed with simple one-stop strategies, contrasting sharply with the multi-stop battles of previous years. Isola stated the target was to replicate last season's mix of one-stop, two-stop, and three-stop races, but the new car regulations – featuring significantly less downforce and a near-50:50 power unit split requiring drivers to lift and coast – have dramatically reduced tyre wear, making longer stints more viable. The C6 compound has been dropped entirely, leaving a narrower C1 to C5 range, and the radically different chassis is putting less load on the tyres.

While Pirelli collected data suggesting a softer option might be needed for some circuits (like Bahrain potentially using C2, C3, C4), any changes require FIA approval. Isola, departing this summer, drew parallels to 2017, when wider tyres improved durability and led to a wider compound range in 2018, but stressed it's too early to mandate changes for 2027 as teams continue to develop the new cars throughout the season.
