Heat Hazard declared for Austrian Grand Prix as temps top 31°C

The FIA has activated its Heat Hazard protocol for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, citing forecasted temperatures above 31°C on Saturday and Sunday. Drivers may don cooling vests or add a 0.5 kg ballast to meet safety requirements. The measure follows mainland Europe’s first major summer heatwave, which has already broken June records in Austria and intensify cockpit fatigue.

Article B1.5.10 of the FIA F1 Regulations triggers the hazard once the official weather service predicts the index will exceed the threshold. Forecasts call for 32 °C during FP3 and qualifying, climbing to 33 °C at the 3 pm race start on Sunday, for the leading constructors as well. Teams must decide whether the optional vests provide enough relief or if the added ballast will affect car balance.

Drivers have previously resisted mandatory cooling gear, arguing discomfort and limited efficacy. By keeping the vests optional, the FIA balances safety with driver preference, but the extra weight could alter tyre wear and fuel consumption, potentially reshuffling the mid‑field battle. With championship leaders set to tackle the heat, performance differentials may become as decisive as outright speed for qualifying laps.
