George Russell's Start: Why No Penalty in F1 Australia GP

Social media erupted after footage showed George Russell rolling forward in his Mercedes during the Australian Grand Prix start. The onboard camera revealed the front wheels moved slightly as the light sequence began, sparking claims of a jump start. However, race stewards found no violation of Formula 1 regulations.

According to Article B5.11.1 of the 2026 sporting regulations, a false start requires the car to move after the final red light illuminates. Russell's brief roll occurred before this point, and footage shows his car stationary when the five red lights extinguished simultaneously. The regulations also specify that front tires must not extend beyond grid box lines at the start signal - an element not triggered in this case.

This clarification matters because Russell went on to win the season opener in Melbourne. The only start-related steward investigations involved Franco Colapinto, who received a stop-and-go penalty for team contact after the 15-second signal, and Nico Hulkenberg, whose Audi car was pushed back to the pitlane before the race began.
