FIA slashes Suzuka energy cap to 8MJ ahead of Japanese GP qualifying

Formula 1's governing body has unexpectedly reduced the energy recovery limit for qualifying at the Japanese Grand Prix from 9 to 8 megajoules. This last-minute adjustment follows concerns raised by teams and drivers about excessive 'super clipping' at Suzuka Circuit, described in the paddock as 'harvesting poor'. During the recent Chinese Grand Prix, drivers like Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri reported being penalized for taking risks due to the energy system's behavior.

FIA technical experts revisited Suzuka simulations after the Chinese GP, concluding teams would rely more heavily on super clipping than initially anticipated. Despite earlier plans to delay changes until Miami, the FIA now implements the 8.0 MJ cap for this weekend's Suzuka qualifying with unanimous manufacturer support. The move aims to restore natural driving lines and challenge while maintaining performance balance.

The adjustment won't affect Sunday's race, which the FIA considers 'relatively good'. This targeted refinement reflects ongoing optimization of the 2026 regulations, with further discussions planned. Teams and manufacturers had previously agreed qualifying shouldn't be altered immediately, but the Suzuka-specific simulation review prompted this exception.
