FIA Director Explains 50/50 Power Split and Future of F1

FIA single‑seater director Nikolas Tombazis told Autosport that the 50/50 split of electrical power to internal‑combustion output was not his brainchild but a compromise driven by market realities. The rule sits at the core of the 2026 Formula 1 package and has become a flashpoint for teams battling cost and performance.

Tombazis noted that automotive giants had pledged to abandon internal‑combustion engines, but the shift to full electrification stalled amid consumer resistance. He added that sustainable fuels had emerged as a lifeline, allowing teams to stay competitive while keeping the sport financially viable amid fluctuating market priorities for drivers, teams, and sponsors alike in the ever‑changing.

The 50/50 principle was agreed in summer 2022 when electrification was seen as a "when" rather than an "if". Yet the uptake of EVs has slowed, pushing manufacturers back on their commitments. Tombazis warned that if the market shifts again before 2031, teams will face costly redesigns and uncertain future regulations that could stall progress forever.

Tombazis also stressed that the sport must avoid becoming a hostage to automotive companies' strategic choices. By keeping power‑unit costs low, Formula 1 can attract independent manufacturers and reduce the influence of major brands on technical details. The debate underscores the need for early, decisive rulemaking before the next regulation cycle kicks into gear for all.
