F1 Australian GP: Stroll, Verstappen, Sainz Cleared to Race

Three Formula 1 drivers have been granted special dispensation to start the Australian Grand Prix despite failing to set qualifying times. Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, and Lance Stroll will all line up at the rear of the grid after various setbacks during the weekend.

Verstappen crashed out in Turn 1 during qualifying, while Sainz's Williams stopped on his out-lap in FP3, preventing him from participating in the session. Stroll faced ongoing issues with Aston Martin's Honda power unit, limiting his running throughout the weekend. All three drivers had previously set competitive lap times in practice sessions, clearing the FIA's 107% rule.

Aston Martin successfully argued for Stroll's inclusion, citing his extensive experience in Formula 1 and specifically at Melbourne's Albert Park circuit. The stewards found these arguments compelling enough to allow all three drivers to compete. The 2026 sporting regulations dictate that unclassified drivers permitted by stewards will start behind all classified drivers, with grid positions determined by Friday's FP2 results. Verstappen will start 20th, followed by Sainz and Stroll.
