George Russell claimed a dominant pole position for Mercedes at the Australian Grand Prix, topping all three qualifying segments in Melbourne. The British driver led teammate Kimi Antonelli by three tenths in Q3, with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar taking third place eight tenths slower. Max Verstappen's session ended in dramatic fashion when he crashed on his first flying lap.

Verstappen's high-speed spin at Turn 1 triggered a red flag with under eight minutes remaining in Q1. The four-time world champion's rear wheels locked under braking, leaving him with no time on the board. The incident also affected Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll, who were dealing with technical issues and engine hardships respectively. Russell's early 1m19.507s lap proved sufficient as the session was interrupted.

In the top-10 shootout, Antonelli initially ran wide at Turn 3 before setting a 1m18.811s on his final lap. However, Russell responded with a 1m18.518s to secure pole by three tenths. The session was briefly red-flagged when cooling fans detached from Antonelli's car and scattered across the track. Hadjar finished third, narrowly ahead of Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri, as Mercedes demonstrated clear pace advantage in Melbourne.
