Cadillac's Major F1 Upgrade Shows Promise Despite Austrian GP Setbacks

Cadillac's Formula 1 team showed genuine progress in Austria despite a troubled Friday practice. Valtteri Bottas confirmed the new update package delivered the expected pace increase, with both cars nearly a second clear of Aston Martin despite falling in Q1. Reliability issues struck both drivers - Sergio Perez faced electrical problems limiting his running, while Bottas dealt with a burning floor tray from a build error.

The American outfit introduced significant changes to the sidepods and floor, which Bottas says makes the car feel much more consistent. These updates aim primarily to improve tyre degradation, a persistent weakness caused by insufficient downforce. The reconfigured sidepods expose more floor edge and allow cleaner airflow to the diffuser, while internal repackaging reduces reliance on cooling louvres.

Using supertimes metrics, Cadillac improved from 5.205% slower than Mercedes to 3.721% in Austria, closing on Williams and Haas. McLaren team boss Andrea Stella labeled the MAC-26 the most significantly upgraded car. Perez remained cautious, noting the small track gaps and his limited preparation time.

Sunday's race at the Red Bull Ring will provide the true test with 50C-plus track temperatures expected to challenge thermal degradation and brake cooling. If Cadillac survives these extreme conditions, it will validate their development direction for the remainder of the season.
