The 2024 British Grand Prix finished under the safety car, sparking boos from Silverstone fans after a software glitch briefly showed the message "Safety Car ending" on timing screens. The FIA later confirmed the message was erroneous and that the correct procedures had been followed.

Officials cited Article B5.13.5 and B5.13.4c to explain that the safety car remained on track until the next lap, mirroring the tightened rules introduced after the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP. In that race, only the five title‑contending lapped cars were allowed to overtake the safety car.

Mercedes‑works boss Toto Wolff admitted he would have preferred a 2021‑style restart, yet he praised the FIA for enforcing the regulations. The team chose to keep George Russell on the track, securing second place and 18 championship points, while Ferrari pitted Lewis Hamilton for fresh tires.

Russell echoed Wolff’s sentiment, arguing that safety‑car procedures should not change at the finish. He noted that safety‑car finishes are rare over the past two decades, underscoring the consistency of race control across events.
