Mercedes accepts Antonelli penalty after British GP

Mercedes has confirmed it will not appeal Kimi Antonelli's five-second track limits penalty from the British Grand Prix, dropping the championship leader from ninth to 16th at Silverstone. The Italian was running second with a tyre advantage over race winner Charles Leclerc when a broken front-left wheel shield on his W17 caused severe handling issues. Despite two pit stops to diagnose the problem, Antonelli could not recover and finished ninth on track before the penalty applied.

Team principal Toto Wolff initially suggested Mercedes might challenge the sanction, arguing the car damage constituted a mitigating factor. "We're definitely looking at a situation whether we can avoid that penalty," Wolff said post-race, noting the points could prove decisive in the title fight. The FIA stewards acknowledged the mechanical issue but ruled it did not justify the four track limits violations at Turn 6, applying the standard penalty for a fourth infringement.

After internal review, Mercedes accepted the stewards' reasoning. The decision leaves Antonelli without points from a race where he showed genuine pace, while Leclerc's surprise victory for Ferrari reshapes the championship narrative. The W17's wheel shield failure raises reliability questions for Mercedes as the season progresses.
