Alpine challenges Monaco GP penalties to restore Gasly's podium finish

The FIA has scheduled a virtual hearing for Thursday at 1pm CET to consider Alpine's attempt to overturn the penalties that stripped Pierre Gasly of his Monaco Grand Prix podium. Gasly crossed the finish line third but received two separate five-second penalties for pitlane speeding violations, dropping him to seventh place and promoting Isack Hadjar onto the podium instead.

Alpine submitted two petitions for review, arguing that the 0.1km/h and 0.4km/h speed limit infractions should not have resulted in such severe consequences. The controversy stems from Monaco's unique pitlane configuration, where the FIA calculates average speed through timing loops rather than measuring instantaneous velocity, catching drivers who shortened their route through the curved lane.

Gasly was visibly emotional after the race, describing himself as feeling "robbed" of a podium finish that he believed was taken away for "unfair reasons." The French driver emphasized that ten years of hard work had culminated in this moment, making the penalty particularly painful.

Alpine faces a significant hurdle under Article 14 of the FIA International Sporting Code, which requires teams to demonstrate a "significant and relevant new element" unavailable during the original decision. Right of Review requests rarely succeed in Formula 1, though Williams achieved a notable exception last year with Carlos Sainz's penalty being rescinded after presenting previously unavailable onboard footage.
