OpenAI has introduced Canvas, a new interface designed to enhance collaborative writing and coding projects within ChatGPT. Launching in early beta, Canvas opens in a separate window, moving beyond simple chat interactions to allow users and ChatGPT to work side-by-side on complex tasks. Built on GPT-4o, the platform is currently rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu access scheduled for next week, and a future release planned for Free users.

The interface is optimized for iterative workflows, offering specialized shortcuts for editing and development. For writing, features include the ability to suggest edits, adjust document length, modify reading levels, and add final polish. For coding, Canvas provides tools to review code, add debugging logs, insert comments, fix bugs, and port code to languages like Python, JavaScript, and Java.

OpenAI trained GPT-4o specifically to act as a creative partner, utilizing synthetic data generation to refine the model's ability to trigger the canvas at appropriate times and perform targeted edits. This development represents a significant evolution of ChatGPT’s visual interface, aiming to provide a more robust environment for complex content creation and software development.
