Google Canvas AI Mode: Drafts, Code Tools in Search

Google is rolling out Canvas in AI Mode to U.S. users, merging its document creation tool with the company's AI search experience. The feature, which debuted last March, lets users collaborate with Gemini to draft documents, blog posts, and research papers. Now, Canvas gains expanded capabilities for both creative writing and coding tasks directly within AI Mode.

Users can access Canvas by clicking the plus icon in AI Mode and describing what they want to create. The system generates a working prototype in a side panel, pulling real-time information from web search and Google's Knowledge Graph. These prototypes are fully functional, allowing users to test their creations, view the underlying code, and refine results through conversational follow-ups until they meet specific needs.

This integration transforms Canvas from a standalone tool into a teaching aid within the search experience. New coders can experiment with ideas, see how code works in practice, and build understanding through iteration. By bringing document drafting and interactive tool creation into AI Mode, Google streamlines creative workflows while maintaining the educational value that made Canvas useful for learning coding concepts and refining written content.
