Google Workspace gets Gemini AI overhaul for docs and sheets

Google is revamping its Gemini AI integration across Workspace apps with new document creation and editing tools. The update brings expanded AI capabilities to Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, aiming to eliminate the dreaded blank page by generating drafts and formatting content automatically. Users can now create documents with AI assistance directly from the new interface.

At the bottom of fresh documents, a chatbot-style text box lets users describe what they want, pulling in content from Gmail, other documents, Google Chat, and the web. The system also offers AI-powered editing features, allowing users to reformat text, make specific changes, or use style matching for collaborative documents. All suggestions remain private until approved.

In Sheets, Google claims Gemini's spreadsheet capabilities now rival human performance in recent testing. Users can generate complex spreadsheets through natural language prompts, with the AI allegedly able to fill in missing data by searching online. While previous testing showed Gemini struggled with spreadsheet layouts, Google says this overhaul handles everything from basic tasks to advanced data analysis.
