Petroleum-based adhesives are ubiquitous in construction and packaging, yet they hinder recycling efforts. Patty Ferreira, MBA '97, CEO and cofounder of Silvis Materials, is developing fully biodegradable cellulose adhesives to address this issue. Since 2014, Ferreira has modified cellulose to replicate the adhesive properties of expensive nanocellulose.

Her formula can be derived from virtually any plant cellulose. The MIT Startup Exchange (STEX) is facilitating partnerships with packaging and construction firms to test the technology. Ferreira projects the adhesive will reduce production emissions by up to 80% and consume half the energy of fossil-based alternatives.
