MIT tech powers Artemis II laser livestream

During the Apollo missions, astronauts relied on radio waves for communication, resulting in grainy images. However, the Artemis II mission in April showcased a revolutionary upgrade. The Orion spacecraft transmitted crystal-clear footage using the Orion Artemis II Optical Communications System (O2O), developed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory with NASA Goddard.

This laser-based system delivers data 10 to 100 times faster than radio, enabling high-definition video from deep space. The mission downlinked nearly half a terabyte of data at speeds up to 260 megabits per second, capturing unprecedented views of the moon's far side, a crescent Earth, a total solar eclipse, and meteoroid impacts. Lead engineer Farzana Khatri noted the goal was to prove O2O's utility for human spaceflight, bringing internet-like connectivity to astronauts.

She called the experience amazing, highlighting the system's potential for future missions.
