PhD student Juliana Cumming led the research, developing a modified natural latex blended with biodegradable polymers that avoids toxic sulphur vulcanisation.

This innovation reflects broader trends in material science, where AI is accelerating discovery. Startups like Cusp AI, working with Finnish chemical company Kemira, use AI to explore 300tn possible material structures, testing 20 priority candidates to replace harmful forever chemicals in non-stick pans and packaging.

Despite Silicon Valley's focus on software, physical innovation lags behind. While major AI labs concentrate on generative models and automation, Chinese companies apply AI across manufacturing, energy, and transport. Only 26% of Chinese AI firms focus purely on software compared to 61% in the US, suggesting Asia may lead in tangible technological advancement.
