Researchers have developed a textile from living mycelium that exhibits self-cleaning and near self-repairing capabilities. This engineered living material (ELM) remains active after fabrication, unlike traditional dried mycelium products.

A prototype dress, created by Peelsphere using material from lead researcher Ke Li and her team at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, showcases the potential of this technology. By utilizing dormant *cordyceps militaris* fungus, the material can be renewed and even repaired by applying a nutrient solution. This allows new fungal filaments to grow and mend the fabric, demonstrating a significant step towards responsive and sustainable textiles.

The material's functionality can be further enhanced through "plug-and-play" add-ons of other fungi or yeast. For instance, brewer's yeast (*saccharomyces cerevisiae*) can impart color, and *aspergillus niger* fungus can provide UV protection. These additions are co-cultured with the base mycelium, avoiding genetic engineering. While promising for conceptual fashion and biodegradable packaging, further development is needed for applications in routine clothing or permanent architecture.
