ChatGPT Boycott Grows as Users Cancel Over Trump Ties

A growing movement called QuitGPT is urging users to cancel their ChatGPT Plus subscriptions after revelations about OpenAI's political connections. Freelance developer Alfred Stephen canceled his $20 monthly subscription after learning about Greg Brockman's $25 million donation to Trump's super PAC MAGA Inc. and ICE's use of ChatGPT-4 for résumé screening.

QuitGPT organizers, a coalition of left-leaning activists and tech workers, launched the campaign in late January following a viral video by NYU marketing professor Scott Galloway. The campaign argues that canceling subscriptions could pressure tech companies to distance themselves from the Trump administration. Their Instagram post has garnered over 36 million views and 1.3 million likes, with more than 17,000 people signing up on their website.

While consumer boycotts rarely sway company behavior unless they reach critical mass, the movement taps into broader anxieties about AI's societal impact. Labor organizer Simon Rosenblum-Larson notes concerns about data center energy costs, deepfake porn, teen mental health, and job displacement. The campaign represents a new front in the anti-AI movement, combining political activism with consumer action against what organizers see as tech's growing entanglement with authoritarian policies.
