Valve has released the complete design files for its Steam Machine e-ink display, now officially dubbed the Inkterface. While the company won't sell pre-assembled units directly, they published the full hardware specifications under an MIT license on their GitLab. This move allows enthusiasts to build their own low-power status screens for their handheld gaming hardware.

Building the device requires specific components, including an Adafruit ESP32 Feather with 2MB PSRAM and a 5.83-inch monochrome e-ink panel. Makers will also need an e-ink breakout friend and various machine screws and magnets to complete the assembly. Valve even provided a demonstration video on GitLab to guide users through the physical construction process.

Third-party accessory makers like JSAUX previously suggested interest in creating similar products. While Valve provides the blueprint, the market for finished, plug-and-play versions remains unfulfilled. This release shifts the responsibility of assembly and sourcing from the manufacturer to the individual hobbyist or hardware tinkerer.
