United Airlines is cracking down on passengers who refuse to wear headphones while using personal devices on flights. The airline updated its contract of carriage on February 27, adding a provision that allows flight crews to remove passengers who play audio through speakers. This behavior could also result in a permanent ban from future flights.

According to United's revised policy, passengers who listen to entertainment without headphones may be refused transport and could face financial liability for any losses or damages caused. The airline stated it has always encouraged headphone use and saw the expansion of its Starlink Wi-Fi service as an opportunity to formalize this expectation in its official policies. Passengers who forget headphones can request a free pair if available.

The policy change sparked mixed reactions online. Some users called it common sense, while others noted it has become increasingly common on flights, particularly among families with young children. Flight attendants reported having to address this issue on nearly every flight, calling it a distraction from their primary safety and service duties.
