Unicode 18.0 Beta Adds 13,000+ New Characters Including Four Scripts

The Unicode Consortium released the beta draft for Unicode 18.0.0, introducing 13,047 new characters that bring the total repertoire to 172,848. This update adds four new scripts: Chisoi, Proto-Cuneiform numerals, Jurchen, and Seal, expanding support for additional writing systems worldwide.

The release includes new data files like JurchenSources.txt and SealSources.txt, while synchronizing updates across five Unicode Technical Standards. Implementation teams should review migration implications, as some changes may require modifications to existing software that processes Unicode text.

Code charts come in multiple formats—block-by-block, delta, and consolidated PDFs—to help developers locate both new and existing characters efficiently. An interactive online core specification replaces previous bookmark pages, and radical-stroke indices assist with CJK ideograph lookup.

Five synchronized technical standards accompany this release, with data files reflecting the complete planned character repertoire. The beta review period runs until the planned September 2026 publication, giving implementers time to test compatibility with the expanded character set.
