Zed font system expands Indigenous language support

Typotheque has released the Zed font system supporting 547 languages worldwide. The font prioritizes Indigenous languages using the Roman alphabet, particularly those from North America and Africa. During research with British Columbia Indigenous communities, developers discovered characters missing for Wakashan and Salishan languages, leading to a proposal that would ensure accurate representation of these languages.

Their character encoding proposal was accepted for Unicode 16.0, making Zed the first font to include these new characters. While the updated standard allows other fonts to adopt these characters, Typotheque's work demonstrates how type design directly impacts cultural preservation. The company actively collaborates with designers and communities worldwide to expand language support even further.

Current development includes extensions for Arabic, Bangla, Canadian Syllabics, Cherokee, and dozens of other writing systems. This comprehensive approach makes Zed a truly accessible typeface reflecting global diversity. The project stands as a testament to how typography can address the digital representation of endangered languages and cultures facing extinction.
