US Aircrew Cancer Mortality and Radiation Risk Study

Aircrew members receive the largest mean annual effective dose of ionizing radiation of any occupational group in the US, primarily due to cosmic rays encountered at commercial flight altitudes. Potential health consequences of this exposure, including cancer risk, have become a priority for public health experts and federal agencies. Yet whether occupational radiation exposure among aircrew translates to increased cancer-related mortality remains unclear, as studies have been limited by small numbers of deaths and reliance on selective cohorts or single cancer sites.

We aimed to ascertain whether pilots and flight attendants have elevated risk-adjusted radiation-related cancer mortality compared with other occupations. The study addressed gaps in existing research by examining mortality patterns across multiple cancer sites rather than focusing on single outcomes.

Findings indicated that aircrew members do face increased cancer-related mortality risks when adjusted for radiation exposure. The analysis utilized comprehensive mortality data and occupational exposure assessments to provide more robust evidence than previous investigations.

This research highlights the need for continued monitoring of radiation exposure among commercial pilots and flight attendants, particularly as air travel continues to expand globally.
