Switzerland's SCION project offers secure BGP alternative for global finance

SCION is a new internet routing architecture developed at ETH Zürich that replaces BGP with a secure, multi-path system designed to prevent hijacking and outages. Unlike BGP's decades-old, unauthenticated framework, SCION uses cryptographic path validation and isolation domains to ensure packets follow pre-approved routes. This isolation prevents compromises in one domain (like Australia's 2015 ATM failure) from affecting others, a critical feature for global finance.

While BGP remains entrenched in global infrastructure, SCION's adoption by SIX Group, operator of Switzerland's interbank payment system, demonstrates its practical viability. Perrig's decade-long academic pursuit faced skepticism but gained traction after proving its real-world application in Switzerland's high-stakes financial network, where failure is not an option.
