Scientists at the University of Maryland have developed Smart Underwear, a wearable device that continuously tracks human flatulence using electrochemical sensors to measure hydrogen levels. A study found healthy adults produce flatus an average of 32 times daily, roughly double the 14 events previously reported in medical literature. Recruitment targets three groups: 'Zen Digesters' consuming high-fiber diets with minimal gas, 'Hydrogen Hyperproducers' with excessive output, and 'Normal People'. Stool samples from extreme groups will help identify microbial drivers of gas production, addressing the gap between known gut microbes and their active functions.

While patent applications are filed and the technology licensed to Ventoscity LLC, enrollment in the Flatus Atlas is limited. This research underscores the need for objective measurement tools in gastroenterology, moving beyond subjective patient reports to scientifically validate gas-related complaints and understand individual variation in gut health.
