Engineers at the University of California have developed a prototype smart ring capable of non-invasive blood sugar measurement, a significant advancement for health wearables. Unlike current smart rings and devices like the Apple Watch, which rely solely on biophysical data, this new ring analyzes chemical biomarkers from sweat.

Published in Nature Communications on July 23, the research details how the ring can continuously monitor up to four biochemical measurements, including glucose, ketones, vitamin C, uric acid, lactate, and alcohol concentrations. This technology holds particular promise for individuals with Type 1 diabetes, as it could aid in optimizing insulin dosing. Testing indicated accuracy comparable to invasive continuous glucose monitors.

While the current prototype is bulky with a 12-hour battery life, researchers anticipate improvements in future commercial versions. This development signifies a potential shift towards continuous molecular-level health monitoring.
