Hideki Sato, the engineer who designed Sega's most iconic consoles, has died at age 77. Sato served as Sega's president from 2001 to 2003 and was responsible for hardware development from the Master System through Dreamcast. Japanese outlet Beep21 reported his passing this weekend.

Sato joined Sega in 1971 and led the R&D team that created the company's arcade and home console hardware. His team pioneered the use of cutting-edge arcade technology in consumer products, including the 16-bit Genesis/Mega Drive. Sato explained their approach: "Arcade development was something we were very invested in, so we were always using the most cutting-edge technology there."

On Dreamcast, Sato emphasized "play and communication" as the development keyword, incorporating modems and VMUs for connectivity. He acknowledged the marketing challenges, noting they advertised a "128-bit graphics engine" despite the SH-4 being only 64-bit. Sato's engineering leadership helped Sega compete in the "bit wars" era, though Dreamcast ultimately marked the end of Sega's hardware business. His legacy includes some of gaming's most influential consoles.
