ReFrame is an experimental camera with a 4" e Ink Spectra 6 color display that captures and displays one photo at a time, making every frame deliberate. The display uses six pigments, so photos are dithered before appearing — looking between a newspaper halftone and an old video game. Processing takes 15 seconds as colors arrive one by one, like a digital Polaroid. Electrical charges physically move ink particles, and the image persists without power; only a new photo clears the screen. When idle, ReFrame doubles as a desk photo frame.

With help from APOSSIBLE, the camera was sent to four professional photographers worldwide. Hardware and software are open source on GitHub, using only off-the-shelf components: a Raspberry Pi Zero, Pi Camera 3, the display, and a battery. Photos save digitally — both original and dithered versions downloadable via web dashboard.

ReFrame is a passion project by Kaloyan Kolev and friends. Not yet for sale; the current version is designed for self-build via the GitHub guide, with individual orders hoped for soon.
