Origami Folds Create Conductive Paths in Liquid Metal Paper

Researchers at MEI Lab at City University of Hong Kong developed a paperlike material impregnated with liquid metal that becomes conductive when folded or cut. The material, 55% polyester and 45% cellulose, initially nonconductive due to an oxide layer, conducts when pressure (2.5–100 MPa) cracks the layer. Folding and cutting alone suffice, no molds needed.

After optimizing ratios and airbrush application, folded edges achieve 4.4 Ω/cm resistance, cut edges 23.18 ohms per centimeter. Conductivity persists when flattened, works both sides. Cost: US $1.80 per 10×10 cm. Components attached via conductive thread and masking tape.

They created Liq Met Craft toolkit with browser-based design software. Three versions: Chinese papercraft fan, origami (12 designs), 3D models. 42 participants tested all versions, found easy, some created original designs. Published in CHI '26. Future work: new substrates, pop-up books, switches.
