OpenTTD Steam Distribution Changes: What Players Need to Know

OpenTTD, the popular open-source transport simulation game, has been available on Steam for five years. Starting today, the standalone version will no longer be sold directly on the platform. Instead, new players must purchase a $9.99 bundle that includes both OpenTTD and the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe, which has been re-released by Atari.

Existing Steam owners won't see any changes - they'll continue receiving updates and can re-download the game as usual. The shift affects only new purchases on Steam and GOG.com, where the same bundle is now required. Other distribution platforms remain unchanged, and the game can still be downloaded for free from the official website.

The bundle includes a faithful emulation of Chris Sawyer's original Transport Tycoon Deluxe, now playable on modern systems. This change comes as Atari re-releases the classic game, making it available for Windows, Mac, and Linux users. While OpenTTD remains free and open-source, the Steam distribution model now requires purchasing the original game alongside it.

This move represents a significant shift in how new players can access OpenTTD through major digital storefronts. The development team continues independently, supported by players, with no changes to their workflow or the project's open-source nature.
