Unreal Tournament 2004 Gets Free Modern PC Update

The OldUnreal community has released a major update for Unreal Tournament 2004, bringing the 22-year-old first-person shooter to modern systems. After Epic Games ended official support in 2022, the community stepped in with a free patch that makes the game compatible with Windows, Linux, and Mac. The update includes bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.

This revival comes through the OldUnreal initiative, which has been working to preserve classic Unreal Engine games. The project received Epic's blessing to reissue the game for free, marking the first significant update in two decades. While the original game supported up to 32-player multiplayer matches, the community patch aims to keep this chaotic arena shooter experience alive for modern audiences.

The update process remains somewhat complex compared to modern game launchers. Users must download the full game installer from the Old Unreal website and follow detailed installation instructions. The project's main developer, Stijn Volckaert, has indicated that while the patch works in online games, there are still compatibility issues with certain servers that will be addressed in future updates.
