OSM US is excited to announce Old Insurance Maps.net (OIM) as its latest Charter Project. OIM hosts over 1200 georeferenced Sanborn Insurance Maps, primarily from the Library of Congress, dating from 1867 to the 1960s. These detailed historical maps, once massive tomes with paper cutouts over renamed streets and demolished buildings, are now accessible for georeferencing via ground control points and digital stitching.

Founded by Adam Cox at Louisiana State University in 2022, OIM serves hobbyists, scholars, and professionals exploring hometown history or conducting research. The platform supports open historical mapping through crowdsourced georeferencing and integrates with Open Historical Map (OHM) and Yesterdays as base layers. Users can request maps for their city, contribute via GitHub, join the OSM US Slack channel #oldinsurancemaps, or donate through OSM US.

As a Charter Project, OIM gains stable legal and fiscal support to advance its mission of accessible, engaging historical mapping.
