Mysterious Numbers Station Emerges Amid Iran Conflict

A mysterious shortwave radio broadcast has been transmitting twice daily from a US military base in Germany since the start of the US-Israel attack on Iran. The encrypted numbers station, first detected on February 28, broadcasts on 7910 kHz at 02:00 UTC and 18:00 UTC, playing strings of Persian numbers preceded by the word "Tavajoh!"

Radio experts using multilateration traced the signal to Böblingen, southwest of Stuttgart, within a restricted area between Panzer Kaserne and Patch Barracks. The transmissions, lasting up to two hours and divided into five to six segments, appear to be part of a Cold War-era intelligence communication system. Number stations have historically been used by governments to communicate covertly with agents abroad.

While the broadcast's origin is now identified, its purpose and recipients remain unknown. Some speculate it could be Iranian intelligence adapting to disrupted communications, while others suggest it might be US, Israeli, or Iranian opposition forces operating from Europe. The signal has already faced jamming attempts consistent with Iranian techniques, prompting the station to switch frequencies to 7842 kHz. The timing during heightened geopolitical tensions and internet blackouts in Iran suggests these analog methods may be filling communication gaps when modern channels fail.
