Modos Flow adds color and speed to e-paper monitors

Modos, a two‑person startup, is launching a crowdfunding campaign for the Modos Flow, a 13.3‑inch color e‑paper monitor that ups the native resolution to 3,200 × 2,400 and runs at 60 Hz. The device replaces the DIY Paper Monitor Dev Kit with an all‑in‑one USB‑C monitor aimed at laptops and PCs. Its launch follows a successful Paper kit that nearly doubled a $110,000 goal.

The higher resolution stems from a new open‑source controller called Enchanter, which uses a larger FPGA, double DDR3 bandwidth, and a Chrontel CH7516 DisplayPort‑to‑LVDS chip supporting DisplayPort 1.1. This upgrade cuts pixel response from roughly 100 ms to 50 ms, and because the controller adds no buffering, input‑to‑display latency drops noticeably despite e‑paper’s inherent sluggishness.

Co‑founders Alexander Soto and Wenting Zhang say manufacturing hiccups—chip shortages, tariff delays, and a color‑mixing bezel that took a month to perfect—forced them to double timelines and stay close to factories. Their focus on open hardware cultivated a community where users repurpose the kit, reinforcing the founders’ decision to avoid venture capital and keep development in‑house.

By delivering a color e‑paper display with laptop‑grade resolution and responsive refresh, Modos positions the Flow as a low‑power alternative for developers, designers, and remote‑work setups that value eye‑friendly screens. The open‑source controller also invites third‑party extensions, potentially expanding the niche market beyond hobbyists toward professional prototyping environments.
