Researchers at Flinders University in South Australia have developed a biodegradable film made from calcium caseinate, the primary protein in milk. The material, created by blending caseinate with modified starch, bentonite nanoclay, glycerol, and polyvinyl alcohol, breaks down completely in soil within 13 weeks. This development offers a promising alternative to conventional single-use plastics that persist in the environment for centuries.

The team conducted extensive testing to evaluate both performance and safety. The film demonstrated durability comparable to traditional plastic while maintaining flexibility suitable for food packaging applications. Microbial testing showed bacterial colony levels remained within acceptable limits for non-antimicrobial biodegradable films. However, Professor Youhong Tang recommends further antibacterial evaluations before widespread commercial deployment.

This research addresses growing concerns about plastic pollution, with global production reaching 475 million tonnes annually and only 10% being recycled. The project represents an international collaboration between Australian and Colombian researchers who focused on using inexpensive, biodegradable ingredients. Professor Alis Yovana Pataquiva-Mateus emphasized that developing sustainable alternatives is crucial for reducing single-use plastic waste, particularly from food packaging. The team believes this milk-based material could play a significant role in the circular economy revolution needed to conserve resources and reduce environmental impact.
