Mercedes-Benz joins a growing list of automakers reversing course on touch-sensitive controls. After customer feedback criticized the removal of physical buttons, the German manufacturer has committed to bringing back tactile controls for key functions while maintaining its large touchscreen displays across their lineup.

Unlike rivals Audi and Volkswagen who reduced screen sizes, Mercedes will keep its expansive 39.1-inch MBUX 'Hyperscreen' dashboard while adding physical buttons in front of wireless chargers and on the steering wheel. Sales boss Mathias Geisen acknowledges customer demands for direct access to specific functionalities.

The brand recognizes customers love large screens but want hard controls for essential features. The upcoming GLC SUV, arriving in Q4 2026 on the MB.EA electric platform, will showcase this blended approach. Mercedes plans to incorporate more physical controls while maintaining the digital connectivity customers expect from their mobile devices.
