Physical Car Buttons Mandatory in Europe, China

China and Europe are mandating physical buttons for essential car functions, potentially reshaping global vehicle design. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology proposed rules requiring real controls for gear selection, ADAS, defrosters, and power windows by July 2027, following Europe's similar regulations for Euro NCAP safety ratings.

This shift reverses a decade-long trend toward touchscreen-dominated interiors inspired by Tesla. Major automakers including Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Hyundai have already begun reintroducing physical controls after acknowledging that excessive touch interfaces created driver distraction and usability issues. Chinese brands like BYD and Xiaomi followed the same touchscreen-heavy approach before the regulatory pushback.

The implications extend beyond Europe and China. Since car development is global, automakers may adopt unified designs featuring physical buttons for core functions across all markets, including the United States. While US regulations don't currently require physical controls, the convergence of safety standards worldwide suggests American consumers could see more traditional buttons return in future models, even without local mandates.
