FAA Returns Boeing's Sign-Off Authority for 737 MAX, 787

The U.S. government has reinstated Boeing's authority to issue airworthiness certificates for its 737 Max and 787 Dreamliner aircraft. This responsibility was previously removed following fatal 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced Friday that Boeing can resume signing off on its planes before delivery. The decision comes after the FAA observed comparable production quality findings over the past eight months, whether the certificates were issued by Boeing or the FAA itself. "Based on these results, the FAA determined it can safely return this responsibility to Boeing," the agency stated.

Boeing affirmed its commitment to working under FAA oversight to build safe, high-quality aircraft. This move represents a significant vote of confidence from the regulator and the U.S. government, following a period of safety challenges for the aerospace giant, including a January 2024 incident where a door plug detached from a 737 Max 9.
