ArXiv announced multiyear philanthropic commitments totaling $17.2 million from Simons Foundation International, XTX Markets, and Siegel Family Endowment to support its transition to an independent nonprofit. The investment spans three to five years and will strengthen technical infrastructure, support ongoing operations, and improve services for millions of researchers worldwide.

For 35 years, ArXiv has served as a trusted venue for sharing scientific findings across physics, mathematics, computer science, and other fields. CEO Penelope Lewis expressed gratitude for the commitments that put ArXiv on solid footing for its next chapter. The funds will support three core areas: general operations and service improvements, continued technical development including AI-generated content management, and strengthening governance as an independent nonprofit.

David Spergel, president of Simons Foundation, noted ArXiv has made math and science more open and collaborative for decades. Simon Coyle, head of philanthropy at XTX Markets, emphasized the importance of robust, open-source infrastructure amid rapid AI advances. Joshua Elder, SVP at Siegel Family Endowment, highlighted open access as essential for equitable digital infrastructure. These commitments build on previous community-based donor support.
