Hong Kong reserves interbancary near historical lows, concerns about volatility in borrowing costs as the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) defends the currency peg. With the Hong Kong dollar nearing the weak end of its trading band, the HKMA must buy local dollars to prevent a breach, draining the aggregate balance—a key liquidity buffer. This balance has fallen to HK$54 billion ($6.9 billion), a level only seen once in 2023 during active currency defense.

Strategists warn that further interventions could sharply spike interbank rates. Carie Li of DBS Bank notes that Hong Kong Interbank Offered Rates (Hibor) are expected to trend upward, with volatility increasing if the balance drops further. The HKMA has cautioned the public on interest-rate risks.

Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. suggests the HKMA may inject liquidity via bill buybacks or non-renewals to stabilize rates, though this could counteract currency defense efforts. Frances Cheung of OCBC notes that such shifts may prolong rate fluctuations. Morgan Stanley analysts argue that while a low aggregate balance increases Hibor’s sensitivity, broader banking liquidity remains healthy due to deposit growth outpacing lending.

The balance represents only 2.6% of the monetary base. Despite this, carry traders remain vulnerable to sudden rate spikes, keeping them cautious about pushing the currency lower.
