Alejandro Garnacho joined Aston Villa on loan from Chelsea to revive his career but faces a difficult start under Unai Emery. The winger was left on the bench for the Carabao Cup win at Coventry despite seven changes, with academy product George Hemmings and £47m signing Ibrahim Mbaye preferred. A facial injury in early August disrupted Garnacho's pre-season, causing him to miss the Super Cup defeat by Paris St-Germain.

Emery emphasised patience, stating Garnacho is "a little bit behind" and must "continue working" to understand the team's methods. The manager has a history of easing players in slowly; Youri Tielemans did not start a Premier League game until November 2023. Villa pursued Garnacho after Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers for £117m, creating a void.

Nicolas Jackson also moved from Chelsea for a club-record £65m, marking eight deals between the clubs in four years. The loan includes an obligation to buy tied to appearances, but Harvey Elliott's precedent raises concerns. The Liverpool loanee triggered a £35m clause after just 10 appearances but was used only four times before Emery declined a permanent move.
