On 24 August 2026, cease and desist letters were sent by X Corp. demanding a permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the project's repository. UPDATE: Following legal advice, the Nitter project will continue. More details will be announced soon. Nitter is a free and open source alternative Twitter front-end focused on privacy and performance.

Inspired by the Invidious project, it offers no JavaScript or ads, with all requests going through the backend to prevent Twitter from tracking your IP or JavaScript fingerprint. It uses Twitter's unofficial API (no developer account required) and is lightweight—60KB for @nim_lang vs 784KB from twitter.com. Features include RSS feeds, themes, mobile support, and AGPLv3 licensing, which prohibits proprietary instances.

The project accepts donations via Liberapay, Patreon, Ko-fi, BTC, ETH, XMR, SOL, $Nitter, and ZEC. For legal inquiries and DMCA requests, contact [email protected]. You can email [email protected] or join the Matrix channel for support.
