Scientists and defense firms are racing to end GPS dependence after conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East exposed its vulnerability to jamming and spoofing. A May 2024 UK military test flight carried a briefcase‑sized Bose‑Einstein condensate—a quantum sensor cooled near absolute zero—developed by BAE Systems, Infleqtion, and Qineti Q. This device, created by Colorado‑based Infleqtion, uses lasers to immobilize atoms, producing a sensor far more precise than conventional inertial systems and immune to interference.
