Nintendo Switch 2 Adds Docked VRR Support

Nintendo has finally delivered Switch 2 docked variable refresh rate (VRR) support for TV gaming, after initially announcing and then quietly dropping the feature. The company announced the update on its Japanese site, stating: "VRR output is now support in TV mode." When both software and TV support it, video outputs at a refresh rate matching the game's processing speed. An update to the Nintendo Switch 2 Dock is required.

VRR reduces judder and tearing by syncing the TV's refresh rate to the game's frame rate. Though VRR was promised for both handheld and docked modes at launch, Nintendo later removed docked VRR details, confirming it as handheld-only—until now. A July job listing for a senior display engineer with VRR knowledge hinted at ongoing work.

The feature is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. The firmware update also includes a handheld boost toggle, Mii editor improvements, and full system transfer between Switch 2 consoles. Nintendo recently unveiled Metroid Ravenous and a Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake during its Direct event, and will release a 40th-anniversary Legend of Zelda-themed Switch 2 console next month.
