The FBI is scrambling to protect its staff after a criminal hacking group known as Shiny Hunters carried out what may be one of the worst breaches of sensitive government information in U.S. history. The group claimed to have stolen personal data on thousands of FBI staffers, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, home addresses, phone numbers, and TSA Pre Check numbers. The FBI sent an internal memo stating it believes every single employee may have had their data compromised. Charlie Savage of The New York Times reported that some employees have sensitive roles in national security wiretapping or counter-espionage targeting Russia or China. The breach has caused significant distress among agents, who fear their personal information could be used to target them or their families. Before this incident, Shiny Hunters was known for extorting victims for millions of dollars. The group claims the hack was retribution for a public FBI advisory. The Bureau stated it is working around the clock to investigate the cyber incident.

In other news, new data shows the amount of oil getting out through the Strait of Hormuz rose sharply this month. According to the tracking firm Kepler, about 6 million barrels were exiting daily in August, jumping to roughly 10 million barrels a day in September. While still well below pre-war levels of 16 million barrels, the uptick is seen as a significant sign of recovery.
