Hong Kong's new dog-friendly dining scheme attracted overwhelming interest, receiving 2,205 applications for just 1,000 permits. Authorities will conduct a ballot to allocate the permits, allowing participating restaurants to welcome dogs indoors from mid-July. The initiative marks a significant shift from a decades-old ban, though restaurants serving hotpot, teppanyaki, or barbecue are excluded.

Participating businesses must keep dogs on leashes, off tables, and display signage. Separate seating areas and safeguards like pee pads are encouraged. With over 240,000 households owning pets, the government aims to tap into the growing pet economy.

Experts emphasize proper ventilation and air purifiers to address hygiene and allergy concerns. The scheme includes training for 90 inspection officers to ensure compliance and protect permit status for non-compliant venues.
