Mark Selby, Judd Trump, Mark Williams, Wu Yize and Barry Hawkins advanced from the first round of the English Open in Brentwood on Tuesday. Selby, ranked second in the world rankings, edged Ricky Walden 4-3. Despite leading 2-1 following breaks of 111 and 135 in frames two and three, Selby trailed 3-2 before winning the last frame with a break of 69. Trump whitewashed Jordan Brown 4-0, while Mark Williams beat Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon. Wu Yize and Barry Hawkins completed a clean sweep for top-10 players, defeating Yang Gao 4-1 and Lyu Haotin 4-2 respectively.

Selby will face Zhang Anda in round two, while Trump meets Ashley Carty. Mark Williams takes on Matthew Selt, Wu faces Xu Si and Hawkins will play either Gary Wilson or Daniel Wells. Shaun Murphy later beat Artemijs Zizins 4-2 to set up a second-round tie against Jamie Clarke, who upset David Gilbert 4-3.
