Apple AirPods Code Unveils Camera Specs & Features

Apple is working on camera‑equipped AirPods, as indicated by a demo video found in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate. Inside the code, a hidden framework called AccessorySensorManager manages sensor data from thewhen connected to a Mac. The framework shows that each earbud has a camera capable of synchronized RGB stills up to 1 megapixel. AirPods support periodic image capture but not video; in "active" mode, a user trigger via Siri can request a 640x640 pair, which returns a processed 1024x1024 image, while passive mode captures 320x320 frames that output 320×320 or 512×512 resolutions.

The passive mode appears aimed at background environmental awareness, reacting to speech, posture, head rotation, and movement outside a defined area. Lens distortion correction, dual‑camera calibration, and camera‑to‑motion sensor calibration allow the device to reject images affected by excessive movement or occlusion. Some processing happens on‑device, with peripheral inference detecting a person in view. The code also hints at a capture indicator light on each AirPod, controlled remotely to show when still images are taken.

The demo featured a Pro 3 model coded B790; Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple now focuses on a new generation, B798, slated for a 2027 launch alongside the 20th‑anniversary iPhone. The findings illustrate potential capabilities rather than final product guarantees.
